Mr. Plummer has won many awards for his
stage work, including the
Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle Award – The Edwin Booth Award, the
Boston Critic’s Award, Chicago’s
Jefferson Award, and Los Angeles’ Ovation
Award for his performance
in “Barrymore”. A leading member of Britain’s
National Theatre under Sir
Lawrence Olivier, the Royal Shakespeare Company
under Sir Peter Hall and
Canada’s Stratford Festival under Sir Tyrone
Guthrie and Michael Langham,
he is widely recognized as one of the finest
classical actors of modern
time.
His cinematic career has
been just as formidable and successful. Having made
his debut in Sidney Lumet’s
“Stage Struck”, Mr Plummer has appeared in a
mass of notable and Academy
Award films. These appearances have included
roles in such motion
pictures as “The Sound of Music” (alongside Dame Julie
Andrews), “The Man Who
Would Be King”, “The Battle of Britain”, “Waterloo”,
“The Silent Partner”,
“Dragnet”, “Daisy Clover”, “Star Trek IV”, “Malcolm
X”, “Dolores Claibourne”,
“Wolf”, “Twelve Monkeys”, “Murder by Decree”,
“Somewhere in Time” and
many others.
In recent years,
cinema-goers will have seen Mr Plummer playing television
journalist Mike Wallace in
Michael Mann’s Oscar-nominated “The Insider”, and
appearing in Ron Howard’s
Academy Award winning “A Beautiful Mind” and Atom
Egoyan’s “Ararat.” He has
also completed work on such forthcoming releases
as “Blizzard” (directed by
LeVar
Burton), “Nicholas Nickleby” (with
director
Douglas McGrath) and “Devil’s Throat”
(directed by Mike Figgis).
Beside his work on the big screen, Mr
Plummer has also embarked on a hugely
successfully television
career. Among his hundreds of television performances
are Emmy-winning roles in
“Hamlet at
Elsinore”, “The Thornbirds”,
“Nuremberg”,
“Little Moon of Alban”, “Moneychangers” and a co-starring role
in “On Golden Pond” with Julie Andrews.
Mr Plummer has also written
extensively for stage, television, and
the concert-hall.
Over the course of his long
and distinguished career, Mr Plummer has naturally garnered many awards
and honors from critics, audiences and his
fellow actors in the
UK, USA, Austria and Canada. He has won two Tony awards (having received
four nominations), two Emmy awards (having received six
nominations),
Great Britain’s Evening Standard award and
Canada’s Genie Award. He received an honorary knighthood and was invested
as Companion of the Order of Canada by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969.
An honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from
New York’s Julliard School and the
recipient of the Governor-General’s
lifetime achievement award, Mr Plummer was also the first performer to be
presented with the Jason Robard’s Award for Excellence in memory of his
great friend. He was inducted into the American Theatre’s Hall of Fame in
1986 and into
Canada’s Walk of Fame in
1997.
Christopher Plummer comes to A Royal
Christmas after a very successful year, during which he gained huge
critical acclaim for his role as King Lear in Sir Jonathan Miller’s much
lauded production of the Shakespeare play at
Canada’s
Stratford Festival. All at A Royal Christmas are pleased to welcome him to
this year’s show where he will also appear in the role of Scrooge from
Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol".
